VKU welcomes and collaborates with Offenburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany

On the afternoon of January 20th, 2025, Vietnam-Korea University of Information and Communication Technology (VKU), the University of Danang, had the honor of hosting and working with Offenburg University of Applied Sciences (HS Offenburg), Germany.

Overview of the meeting

Attending the meeting, on behalf of HS Offenburg, were Prof. Dr. Axel Sikora – Scientific Director of the Institute of Reliable Embedded Systems and Communication Electronics (ivESK), Germany. Representing VKU was Dr. Tran The Son, Vice Rector, along with leaders of various departments within the university.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Tran The Son expressed his pleasure in welcoming representatives from HS Offenburg. Established in 2020, VKU enrolls 1,500 students annually, with an average entrance score of 24 points across 16 programs in information technology, communication, and digital economy. Currently, VKU has nearly 7,000 students and aims to reach 10,000 students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels by 2030. The university boasts a faculty and staff of nearly 300, including approximately 70 PhDs and associate professors. Besides, VKU emphasizes building a network of over 200 strategic partners, including domestic and international organizations and enterprises, to collaborate on training, recruitment, sponsorship, and global bilingual programs in English-Vietnamese, Japanese-Vietnamese, and Korean-Vietnamese. The university has also launched numerous activities such as international academic and cultural exchanges, real-world projects, internships, and corporate collaborations. Notably, 100% of student theses are written and presented in English.

VKU leads in enrollment, training, and research in strategic fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, fintech, and logistics. These are key areas for the development of Danang City, aligned with its vision for 2030 and 2045, which includes the establishment of a regional-level semiconductor center, an artificial intelligence hub, and an international financial center. The university has also achieved notable milestones in the past academic year, such as successfully launching the microchip design program with an entrance score of 27, ranking among the top nationwide, introducing new programs and establishing the Fintech Hub, offering an international-standard master’s program in information technology, and organizing various international student exchange programs in countries such as South Korea, Thailand, and Japan.

Prof. Dr. Axel Sikora thanked VKU for their warm welcome and introduced HS Offenburg, founded in 1967 as one of Germany’s prestigious universities of applied sciences. Located in Offenburg, the university excels in programs on engineering, computer science, business, and environmental technology. HS Offenburg emphasizes practical skills and applying knowledge in real-world scenarios, encouraging students to engage in research projects, internships, and collaborations with leading technology companies. Its experienced faculty and modern facilities create a high-quality learning environment.

During the discussions, the two parties explored opportunities for collaboration through joint research projects supported by Vietnam-Germany funding programs, such as the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The focus was on expanding research cooperation in key areas, including embedded systems, telecommunications, and cybersecurity, with applications in the development of smart agriculture and smart cities.

The meeting between VKU and HS Offenburg opened up meaningful prospects for collaboration in research and education, fostering connections between the two institutions for joint projects aimed at promoting high-tech applications, sustainable development, and improving education quality. Both VKU and HS Offenburg anticipate that their efforts will yield practical outcomes, providing students, faculty, and researchers from both sides with opportunities to learn, conduct research, and develop skills in an international environment.
