VKU Takes the Lead in Promoting International Cooperation in Digital Technology and Artificial Intelligence Training and Research
On the morning of June 20, 2025, at the National Scientific Symposium titled “Training High-Quality Human Resources in Digital Technology and Artificial Intelligence in Vietnam: Current Situation and Solutions”, organized by the Central Commission for Propaganda and Education, the Ministry of Education and Training, and the Vietnam Association of ICT Faculties – Institutes – Schools – Universities (FISU Vietnam), the event took place at the Thai Nguyen University of Information and Communication Technology.
Overview of the symposium
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huynh Cong Phap, Rector, and Dr. Nguyen Quang Vu, Head of the Academic Affairs Department of Vietnam-Korea University of Information and Communication Technology (VKU), the University of Danang, were honored to be invited as keynote speakers at this significant and meaningful symposium. Their presentations contributed valuable ideas and solutions to the Central Commission for Propaganda and Education in formulating strategies and policies for developing high-quality human resources in the fields of digital technology and artificial intelligence, to be submitted to the Politburo for consideration and issuance.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huynh Cong Phap Shares at the symposium
At the symposium, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huynh Cong Phap presented VKU’s strategic orientation in training and conducting research in digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI)—fields considered the “heart” of the modern digital economy. VKU is currently the largest unit for digital technology training in the Central Vietnam and ranks among the leading institutions nationwide, with over 7,000 students enrolled. Notably, the AI Engineering major, launched in 2021, has attracted approximately 1,000 new students annually, demonstrating the university’s strong commitment to specialized development in this field.
With a strategic orientation toward comprehensive internationalization, VKU has been offering multidisciplinary training in various areas of digital technology such as semiconductors, information security, fintech, communication technology, and more. The university emphasizes aligning its training programs with global trends and the demands of the international labor market. VKU actively implements bilingual training programs in English-Vietnamese, Japanese-Vietnamese, and Korean-Vietnamese. Notably, 100% of students are encouraged to complete their graduation thesis entirely in a foreign language—an innovative approach that equips students for global integration right from their time at university. In the field of international cooperation, VKU has built a strong network of over 200 partners both domestically and internationally, including top universities, research institutes, and leading technology corporations. A highlight of this effort is the ODA Project funded by KOICA (Korea), with a total budget of USD 7.7 million. This strategic project enhances teaching capacity, invests in advanced equipment, modernizes curricula, and supports the organization of numerous international symposiums on AI and digital transformation.
In addition, VKU has taken the lead in founding the ASEAN Consortium for Innovation and Research (ACIR) in 2023, bringing together leading universities across Southeast Asia. This initiative has created significant opportunities to connect the international academic community and establish a knowledge network aimed at fostering innovation and sustainable development. VKU also focuses on implementing the “Study Abroad at Home” model through specialized learning spaces in collaboration with partners from Japan, Korea, and Europe. These partnerships not only enhance the quality of education but also provide VKU students with direct access to world-class training models right in Vietnam.
With the goal of enhancing the quality of education and research, closely aligned with the spirit of Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW on the development of science, technology, and innovation, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huynh Cong Phap proposed seven key solution groups, as follows:
- Developing Dual Degree and International Joint Programs: Collaborate with leading universities worldwide to establish dual degree programs and joint master’s and doctoral programs in key areas such as artificial intelligence, big data, and cybersecurity. These initiatives help standardize learning outcomes, enhance international reputation, and attract both international faculty and students to study and conduct research in Vietnam
- Establishing Joint Research Centers: Foster partnerships between Vietnamese universities and international partners to establish joint research centers in areas such as digital technology, AI applications in agriculture, healthcare, and smart cities. In parallel, implement cross-border virtual labs to support both research and teaching activities.
- Implementing Co-Teaching and Co-Supervision Programs: Connect international experts with Vietnamese faculty to participate in co-teaching courses and co-supervising theses and dissertations. This approach enhances professional integration and research skills in accordance with international standards.
- Expanding Scholarships and Exchange Programs for Students and Faculty: Broaden access to scholarships, internships, and academic exchange programs with countries strong in technology such as the United States, Germany, South Korea, Japan, and Israel. These opportunities enable students and faculty to engage with world-class academic and research environments.
- Promoting Joint Research Projects and Technology Transfer: Encourage Vietnamese universities and enterprises to participate in international research project networks while developing appropriate mechanisms for receiving and transferring technology suited to domestic conditions.
- Building a Network of International Experts and Advisors: Establish a network of overseas Vietnamese scientists and international scholars to support education, research, and provide critical insights for strategies on developing human resources in digital technology.
- Developing Digital Platforms to Support International Collaboration: Build integrated digital platforms for managing international cooperation, connecting researchers, sharing research data, and facilitating transnational education and high-quality online learning.
