NVIDIA, the world’s most valuable company, discusses cooperation with VKU
On the afternoon of June 24, 2024, the Vietnam-Korea University of Information and Communication Technology, University of Danang (UD-VKU), hosted a visit and working session with NVIDIA Corporation.
An overview of the meeting
Attending the meeting were Dr. Ettikan Karuppiah, Director/Technologist at NVIDIA, Asia Pacific South Region, Mr. Vu Manh Cuong, Director of NVIDIA Vietnam, and Mr. Tran Minh Quan, Technology Development Engineer; representing Danang city were Mr. Le Hoang Phuc, Director of the DSAC Center, and Ms. Pham Nguyen Hoang Yen, Deputy Head of the Investment Promotion Department; and representing VKU were Assoc. Prof.PhD. Huynh Cong Phap – Rector of VKU, Vice Rector PhD. Huynh Ngoc Tho, along with leaders from various departments, faculties, and centers of VKU.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huynh Cong Phap warmly welcomed Dr. Ettikan Karuppiah, Director at NVIDIA – Asia Pacific South Region, for his visit and discussions at VKU.
During the meeting, university leaders shared that VKU is committed to its mission and responsibility in training and providing high-quality human resources, conducting scientific research, and transferring knowledge and technology. VKU aims to become a leading university in Vietnam with aspirations to reach international standards in training and research, operating under an advanced management model, and providing a modern, smart educational environment.
Since its establishment in 2020, VKU has aimed to enroll 1,500 students annually, with an average admission score of 24 points for 14 majors focusing on information technology, communication, and digital economy fields. Currently, VKU has nearly 6,000 students and aims to reach 8,000 to 9,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students by 2025. The faculties consist of over 250 members, including nearly 70 with doctoral degrees or associate professors, accounting for nearly 41% of the total. VKU places significant emphasis on networking and has built a network of over 200 strategic partners, including domestic and international organizations and businesses involved in training, employment, and sponsorship. VKU implements various collaborative training programs such as bilingual programs in English, Japanese, and Korean. Additionally, it conducts numerous international academic and cultural exchange activities, practical projects, internships, enterprise cooperation, and enhances language teaching. Importantly, all undergraduate theses are written and presented in English.
VKU has been offering training in Artificial Intelligence since 2021, currently enrolling 200 students. VKU is also the first university in Central Region Vietnam to announce admissions and training for Semiconductor Design Engineers, with plans to admit around 500 students between 2024-2027 and transition 180 students from related fields to Semiconductor Design. Graduates in Semiconductor Design are expected by 2028. In addition to training Semiconductor Design Engineers, VKU will also launch Accelerator classes in collaboration with businesses, aiming to enroll and train 60-100 students annually.
VKU is actively engaging in international cooperation projects, including a $7.7 million ODA project funded by the Korean government to develop AI and IC personnel, international internship programs, and AI and IC laboratories worth nearly 10 billion VND. Other projects include building labs with server systems and high-performance computing systems for AI and IC, with an estimated budget of nearly 150 billion VND.

Dr. Ettikan Karuppiah expressed his gratitude to the leadership of VKU for the warm welcome and impressive insights shared by VKU. He stated that AI is booming and will become a core technology trend in 2024. NVIDIA, as a leading provider of AI technology products, continues to develop the most advanced GPU chips to meet the growing demand for AI applications worldwide. Vietnam is one of NVIDIA’s strategic markets, and education institutions play a crucial role in adopting, researching, and applying the latest technologies while providing high-quality human resources for innovation.
NVIDIA are planning to establish NVIDIA Ambassador groups in universities. These ambassadors will organize training courses based on NVIDIA’s curriculum, offering free education to the academic community, especially students. All content and materials will be accessible through DLI (Deep Learning Institute) online for free. With this model, universities can expand the number of NVIDIA ambassadors from their faculties to train students, aiming to reach 10,000 students in Vietnam within two years. In Danang, NVIDIA will select 10 lecturers from VKU and other universities to train 2,000 students annually.
At the end of the meeting, VKU leaders expressed hope for positive outcomes from the NVIDIA Ambassador model. VKU looks forward to adopting NVIDIA’s training standards and preparing human resources to embrace the new wave from NVIDIA.
