VKU – VKIST: Close cooperation between research institute and university

At the beginning of the meeting, Assoc. Prof. Ph.D. Phuong Thien Thuong – Deputy Director of VKIST warmly welcomed VKU to visit and work, and briefly introduced the process of formation and development as well as the current operation of VKIST. VKIST is a scientific and technological organization under the Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam, established in 2015 under the provisions of Decree No. 50/2015/NĐ-CP of the Government. VKIST has the function of multidisciplinary technology research and development to serve industries; providing advanced technical services and highly qualified technical and technological human resources for businesses and economic-technical sectors. Located on the campus with a total area of 196,913m2 in Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park, Hanoi, VKIST has about 70 officials, of which about 40 researchers are active in research fields including: Biotechnology, Mechatronics, Energy and Environmental Technology, Information Technology, IT-BT Integrated Technology, Advanced Materials. Operting under the model of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), VKIST aims to realize the mission of becoming a leading multidisciplinary institute for applied research and development of modern technology for industries and sustainable economic development of Vietnam. With the enthusiasm and unremitting efforts of the staff, VKIST has initially launched effective technology products and research results with high practical value.

Speaking at the meeting, Assoc. Prof. Ph.D. Huynh Cong Phap – Rector of VKU also expressed his pleasure when the delegation came to learn and exchange experiences at VKIST, and briefly introduced the process of forming VKU as well as the future development strategies of the University. Assoc. Prof. Ph.D. Huynh Cong Phap especially emphasized the common point of the two units as symbols and achievements of the friendly cooperation between the two Governments of Vietnam and South Korea, playing a great role in the development process of Vietnam and promoting the cooperation relationship between the two countries. VKU is the unique and leading university in the Central – Central Highlands with intensive training in information technology, communication and digital economy with the orientation of applying the international university model, supported by the Governments of Vietnam and South Korea. VKU has also established the Institute of Digital Science and Technology (eSTI) with the aim of creating a cohesive environment for cooperation, research exchange, technology transfer between the University and domestic and foreign scientists, managers – policymakers, businesses from many different fields to maximize the quality of scientific research works as well as promote the application of science and technology in practice, commercialization of scientific, technological and creative products of the University. And to achieve the development goals of the eSTI, VKU needs to promote cooperation with many partners, especially intensive research institutions such as VKIST.
At the meeting, the two sides discussed many issues such as difficulties encountered in the process of implementing research projects, problems in operating the apparatus or policies to attract talents, develop resources, etc. The two sides also exchanged cooperation plans in the coming time such as organizing interviews with VKU students interning at VKIST, short-term study programs for VKU lecturers, eSTI researchers at VKISTs research departments, implementing joint research topics between eSTI researchers and VKIST, etc.
The visit and work of the VKU delegation at VKIST ended well, becoming a premise for the two units to continue discussing specifically the plan to implement cooperation and promote the development of the two sides in the future. It is expected that the two sides will plan to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the coming time.
